Ernest Bloch
(1880-1959)

George Schick - CSO - 3/5/1952 - Mercury/EMI

Ernest Bloch

(19/6/11)

From our knowing, this Bloch piece has never been reissued at least in France. One thinks to Martinů music. Very moving music despite its neoclassicism.

George Schick, 76, died on March 1985.
Mr. Schick was born in Prague and studied at the Prague Conservatory. From 1927-38 he was assistant conductor at the Prague Opera, and he conducted at Covent Garden in 1939 before immigrating to the United States. During World War II he served in the United States Navy. He conducted the San Carlo Opera, the Internationale Opera Company, the Miami Opera Guild and the Little Symphony of Montreal in the 1940's, and from 1950-56 he was associate conductor of the Chicago Symphony under Rafael Kubelík. In 1956, he became coordinator of the opera department of the National Broadcasting Company. Mr. Schick was associated with the Metropolitan Opera from 1958 to 1969 as conductor and musical consultant. He became president of the Manhattan School of Music in 1969. (From the NYT)
